I’ve never been one to be on “trend” with fashion. That’s not saying I don’t like nice clothes; I just don’t think all outfits “work” all the time. For example, big baggy jeans and an oversized sweatshirt to me are fine for an outdoor sporting event but not fine dining like Angus Barn!
Skylight sizing is very similar. VELUX offers twenty-eight standard sized Deck Mounted and Curb Mounted Skylights. Plus, custom sized units can be manufactured to specification on curb units measuring up to 50 ¾ inches wide and 76 ½ inches long. With all those options, homeowners can be assured it is possible for your roofer and or contractor provide the “right” sized unit on your home!
Unfortunately, that’s not the case with a lot of projects and the trend seems to be getting worse. Sun4Light, Inc. Offers VELUX service and warranty solutions from Mebane to the NC Coast. If a homeowner has a problem. We evaluate the issue and determine the remedy regardless of who installs unit(s). Within the last two years, more and more roofing contractors are opting to install skylights larger than the existing openings on replacement projects. Not only does VELUX provide product and installation manuals online, but all suppliers (big box stores, building/roofing businesses) have copies of the VELUX product booklets on-hand for reference.
Why does it matter? Let’s consider the old skylight measures 34×34 inches and the only unit the roofer can find measures 46 x 46 inches. The roofer in turn builds a new curb ten inches larger than the old one and installs the new larger skylight. Unfortunately, the new unit was not installed tightly to the 34 x 34-inch curb resulting in an unseen gap on the roof. As the hot air from the gap hits the cold conditioned air in the light shaft, condensation and or mold forms.
The responsibility of selecting the correctly sized skylight is the responsibility of the contractor. Workmanship errors are not covered by the VELUX 10-Year No Leak Warranties.
Installing wrongly sized skylights out of convenience is like wearing old jeans and sweatshirts. Because it is easy!
